Apr 20 – Code Red

(Bronx, NY) – In case you missed the Yes Network interview with Joe Girardi after the Red Sox game:

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

Did you order the code red?

Joe Girardi:

You want answers?

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

I think I’m entitled.

Joe Girardi:

You want answers?!

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

I want the truth!

Joe Girardi:

You can’t handle the truth!

Joe Girardi:

Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by pitchers with fastballs. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Michael Kay? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Manny Ramirez and curse the Red Sox; you have that luxury.  You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that throwing at Manny’s head, while tragic, probably saved lives and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives, especially A-Rod and Jeter.

You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that bench, you need me on that bench. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the broadcast booth I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said “thank you,” and went on your way.

Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a microphone and stand a post.   Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

Did you order the code red? Did you order Farnsie to throw at Manny?

Joe Girardi:

I did the job I had to do.

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

Did you order the code red?!

Joe Girardi:

You’re God damn right I did!

Yes Network: Michael Kay:

Then why did he miss?!

Joe Girardi:

The ball slipped out of his hand!    And Joba was with his father in Nebraska .
