Sep 13 – Saturday Nite Yanks Top Rays 6-5

Bronx, NY) – So the Friday Nite Yanks played this one on Saturday night and after being trounced by Tampa in the afternoon game, the Bombers produced a gut check and responded back with a nice come-from-behind 6-5 win in the night cap.  The Yanks got up early thanks to a sac fly from A-Rod but Sidney Ponson got into trouble in the 4th and gave up a grand-slam to Ben Zobrist, who entered the game batting .220.  But the Yanks battled back and a Wilson Betemit dinger down the right field line and a Brett Gardner RBI on a fielder’s choice brought the Yanks to 4-3.  The bullpen led by Phil Coke and Damaso Marte kept the Rays in check and in the bottom of the 7th, Derek Jeter got his 3rd hit of the night (and 6th hit of the day) and started the rally.  He scored to tie the game at 4-4 on a throwing error from the Rays on a routine double-play ball from Abreu and then Xavier Nady had the big hit of the game with a two-out single to give the Yanks the lead at 5-4.  An insurance RBI in the 8th from Bobby Abreu proved to be big as Mo picked up his 34th save but gave up a 2-out RBI to Evan LongoriaJoba Chamberlain picked up a hold with a 1-2-3 8th.

Notes:  There are now only 8 games left at old Yankee Stadium.  And the FNY Section 22 crew will wrap up their season next Friday vs. the Orioles.  Also Derek Jeter now trails Lou Gehrig by 3 hits for the most hits ever at Yankee Stadium.  With this victory, the Friday Nite Yanks improved to 5-7 on the season.
