Jan 9 – In the Beginning

mlb-logo1(Bronx, NY) – If they knew then what they know now.  On this date in 1903 Baltimore’s American League franchise is sold for $18,000 and moved to New York.  The franchise will become the New York Yankees.  Almost as good a deal as the Lousiana Purchase from the French or the selling of Manhattan Island to the Dutch.  Long live free enterprise and thanks Baltimore!

Also on this date:

While being driven to the airport by his brother Billy, Tony Conigliaro suffers a massive heart attack and lapses into a coma. The former Red Sox outfielder will remain hospitalized until March 2.

Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski are elected to the Hall of Fame. The perrenial All-star backstop is named on 96.4% of the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballots making Ty Cobb and Hank Aaron the only players to receive a higher percentage.
