Jan 27 – The Core From the Four: And Then There Were 3 (+1)

nyy-26-logo(Bronx, NY) – The Yanks look to end the first decade of the new millenium the way they started it way back in 2000:  win a World Championship title.  When they won #26 some eight years ago, in the 4-1 series victory over the Mets, their 4th title in 5 years seemed so natural.  And virtually every fan had expected them to notch several more in this decade.   Alas while they were very close in 2001 and once again had chances in 2003, the reality is they have declined in opportunity for the past 5 years finally culminating in missing the playoffs altogether in jorge-posada-plus2008.

With several players in their mid-thirties (Jeter, Matsui, Posada, Rivera, Damon and even A-Rod getting there) one has to wonder if the time for #27 is now.   Upgrades in the overall age of the team has helped as older players like Giambi, Abreu and Mussina have left and Burnett, Teixiera and Sabathia all sit under or at 30 but again the age factor is something to wonder about.

And die-hard fans have to notice that only 3 from the 90’s dynasty team remainJeter, Posada and Rivera (and with a late breaking signing now 4:  Andy Pettitte for 1 one more year). Their leadership is truly essential going forward and history already looks back at them in a reverent way but can that final chapter be written in such a storied fashion?   And will Jeter finish his career with the Yanks and acheive 3,000 hits in pinstripes?  WIll Jorge’s remaining 3 years of his contract be worth it?  Will Mo reach the all-time saves mark?  Most fans would love to see all of this happen but in the end focus on one thing from the remaining core:  One More Title.
