Three Runs in the Bottom of the Ninth Finishes Puerto Rico 6-5

to right field for a walk-off two-run single to allow the US to advance to the semi-finals.

It was a fairly dramatic game.  The US led 3-1 early behind a Youklis homer but Puerto Rico chipped away and scored the go-ahead in the 6th and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.  The US used 7 different pitchers who limited P.R. to only 5 hits but they maximized them.

  1. I rather have the WBC in November! Unfortunately I am a Yankees fan who still have to pray that Derek Jeter doesn’t get injured in the WBC playing for Team U.S.A.!

  2. It will be interesting to see how this game impacts the development of David Wright who has had trouble in big spots down the stretch or under pressure. He really came through with a lot of pressure on him and could have easily hit into a game-ending double play but took a low and outside pitch the other way for a monster hit. Perhaps this will help him down the line.

On a ratings and WBC note, this game surely helps the overall concept. Sad to see the stands were basically empty but it was good baseball with plent of ‘playoff’ like drama.

  3. by the way, nice pic of my fellow bergen catholic alum mark derosa in this article

  4. it was an awesome game…just another reason why i really like the idea of the WBC…unfortunately, the us team was a little thin due to the rash of injuries (pedroia, braun, lindstrom, etc)…i would really like to see it moved to november when all of our star players would play, and you wouldnt have to worry about them getting hurt and missing regular season action
