Mar 23 – Phil Hughes Returns to Scranton

Several Other Pitchers Optioned Too as Pre-Season Draws Shorter

(New York, NY) – In a move that is not all that surprising, the Yanks sent Phil Hughes back to Scranton, reports a source from the NY Daily News.

At Triple-A Scranton, he will be the insurance policy for the starting rotation.    In addition, the Yanks optioned four other pitchers to the minors: Steven Jackson and Anthony Claggett also were optioned to Triple-A, while Bronx product Humberto Sanchez was sent to Double-A Trenton and Jason Johnson and Sergio Mitre were reassigned to minor-league camp.

He (Hughes) had a very good spring for us,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I thought he attacked the zone. The thing is, we ran out of innings for him here and we want him stretched out. We can’t do that here.  We were very happy with the progress he made over the fall, into the spring, where he came from last year. He’s had some injuries and he hasn’t pitched as much as he should have the last two years, but he was pretty good this spring.”

The signings of C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett in the off-season had set the stage for this to happen.  However Yankee fans are encouraged by Hughes’ development and will hope he continues that throughout the year.
