Mar 26 – C.C. To Start in Road and Home Openers

nyy-26-logo(Tampa, FL) -The Yanks made it official today and tabbed their big free agent with the honor of starting the season opener as well as the first game in the new Yankee Stadium.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed on Thursday that Sabathia will not only start Opening Day on April 6 at Baltimore, but he is lined up to pitch the April 16 home opener at the new $1.5 billion facility.

“I’m excited to be able to take the ball the first game of the season and to open up the Stadium,” Sabathia said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

In the first year of a seven-year, $161 million contract with New York, Sabathia has been anointed as the staff ace, making him a natural choice to draw the high-profile assignment.

But because he is part of a rotation that also features Chien-Ming Wang, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain, Sabathia had continued to say that he did not know for sure if he would actually get the call for those games.

“I didn’t assume anything,” Sabathia said. “We’ve got so many great starters here, any one of us could start the game. I’m just excited that it’s going to be me.”

So Yankee fans will expect a win in both of those games.  And there is a little mild surprise, as some thought that long time Yankee Andy Pettitte might get the sentimental start on April 16 vs the Indians, but things are set now with C.C.

  1. I rather have my rotation than Carlos Silva, then the often injured Erik Bedard, and who else is in the Seattle Mariners rotation! I much rather have Joba Chamberlain as the fifth starter or the closer of the future with Mark Melancon or Austin Jackson the Yankees centerfielder of the future!

  2. BAH! You start Pettite if it were 1999, in 2009 you start Sabathia! Go Mariners!

  3. Thanks Tom! I agreed that Andy Pettitte should be the sentimental starter for the first official regular season game at the new Yankee Stadium! C.C. Sabathia need to win both games or else he will get booed by the Yankees fans or else the pressure of being in New York could get to him! C.C. Sabathia must pitched like Johan Santana in my eyes in order to justify his money or his contract!
