Mar 27 – Spring Tinkering (or Not)

nyy2-logo(Tampa, FL) – The Yanks continue to do well in spring training with a 16-10 record and tied for first with St. Louis and Atlanta for number of wins in the Florida Grapefruit League.

The big story of late, and it is not all that earth shattering, is the likelihood of Derek Jeter leading off this season and Damon (or others) batting second.  While disguised as tinkering in spring training by Manager Joe Girardi, most believe this is the plan for the regular season ranging in logic to Damon’s ability to pull the ball to the right side to move up runners, to more runs to make up for the early loss of A-Rod, to the more likely reason of Jeter’s high number of double-plays he’s hit into the last 2 years.

The numbers are not so bad.    Jeter, who memorably homered to lead off Game 4 of the 2000 World Series, has batted leadoff in 448 regular-season games, batting .315 and posting a .389 on-base percentage.

The numbers are comparable to his career production as a No. 2 hitter, where he has spent most of his career, batting .316 with a .386 on-base percentage.

“It makes no difference,” Jeter said. “I don’t change a thing. If you’re in the eighth inning and there’s a guy on second base, or you’re up in the second inning with a guy on second base, you’re still going to do the same thing. So I don’t change.”

In other news, George Steinbrenner Sr. will attend the home opener on April 16th vs. Cleveland.  He should receive the largest ovation given what he has done for the franchise culminating in the new Stadium.

Also it looks more and more like Brett Gardner will start in centerfield as the Yanks appear to be open to trading  Melky.

  1. I already told one of my coworkers at work that Brett Gardner is going to be the starting centerfielder on Opening Day this year!
