Mar 29 – Center Debate: No More, It’s Brett

Gardner Gets the Nod over Melky for Starting Slot in Center

NYY-Logo(Tampa, FL) – Joe Girardi announced Sunday that Brett Gardner has beat out Melky Cabrera this spring for the starting spot on opening day.  This was a close contest but after the Yanks made it clear they were shopping Melky a few days ago this announcement became more of a formality.

“Both of them played great,” Girardi said after the Yankees beat Pittsburgh 9-8. “Gardie finished up strong and had a great camp. Right now I think Gardie has a little bit of the edge. He brings a little more speed to the lineup.”

The Yanks can not move Melky to Triple-A so what will happen remains to be seen.  He’s actually had a pretty good spring hitting .340 in 21 games so far this preseason.   Speak up if you don’t agree with the decision!

  1. I am not sure what kind of average Brett Gardner is going to hit in the Major Leagues! You cannot based players batting averages in Spring Training or in September with minor league callups where numbers can be deceving! And anyway Melky Cabrera did made the team but I don’t know if the Yankees will trade him!
