Apr 4 – New York Sports Roundup

FNY(New York, NY) – The first weekend in April is a busy one as NCAA finals begin, the hockey playoff picture shapes up,  the football teams prepare for the draft at the end of the month, pro basketball winds down and finally Major League Baseball begins its season.   A quick glance at the New York sports scene produces the following headlines:

  • Gary Sheffield signs a 1-year deal with the NY Mets which gives him a shot to enter the 500-Home Run club (he’s stuck at 499) while the Mets get a big RH bat but some probable controversy as well.
  • Jay Cutler goes to the Chicago Bears, thus ending dreams of NY Jets fans
  • The NY Giants release WR Plaxico Burress, several months after his shooting incident, ending a relationship with big highs (Super Bowl game-winning TD catch) and various lows.
  • The NY Mets opened its new home at Citi Field with a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox
  • It has been several nice and quiet weeks without an A-Rod headline.
  • Both basketball teams fade down the stretch and enter the lottery sweepstakes
  • The NJ Devils continue to slump heading into the playoffs while the NY Rangers cling to the last spot with only a week’s worth of games left.   Meanwhile Sean Avery continues to be a model citizen albeit it too late for Burress to learn from (unless the Jets pick him up after prison time)
