Apr 17 – First Stadium Win: Yanks Outslug Indians 6-5

Bombers Produce 5 Solo Homers, Jeter’s 8th Inning Blast Proves the Difference

nyy-27-logo(Bronx, NY) – Another beautiful sunny day for baseball in the Bronx but this time the outcome was just as sunny.  Unlike yesterdays’ first official game at the new Stadium, the Bronx Bombers lived up to their name and banged out 5 solo homers (from Damon, Teixeira, Cabrera, Cano and Jeter) to eventually nail that first win in their new house.   In the end it was fittingly Captain Derek’s 8th inning shot that setup Mariano Rivera’s first save opportunity in the House That George Built and he did not disappoint.

Mo did get in a little trouble.  Actually a nice running catch in center by Brett Gardner took away what would have been a leadoff double.  Then with 1 out Cleveland battled and got 2 singles.  But Rivera focused and got a big strikeout of Grady Sizemore followed by a game ending K of Mark DeRosa, who earlier had homered for an initial Indians lead in the 3rd.  And Frank Sinatra started to blare New York, New York for the 45,101 fans to exit with some history.

Joba struggled in this one and left after 4.2 innings, charged with all 5 runs.  It was the 5 walks that really hurt him.  But this time the bullpen was outstanding with no runs over the final 4+ innings of relief with Coke, Albaladejo, Bruney and finally Rivera doing the job.  Coke got the big out to end the bleeding in the 3-run damaging 5th inning and Bruney continues to dominate, striking out 2 of the 3 he faced.  That’s 7 of the last 8 batters over 3 games now that Bruney has struck out.  Bruney picked up his 2nd win of the year and now is in the books as the first Yankee pitcher to win a game at the new Stadium.

The next big test is on Saturday as C-M Wang tries to make adjustments to his sinker.
