Apr 22 – Walk Off! Yanks Defeat A’s 9-7 in 14 Innings

Melky’s 2nd Homer ends the 5 hour drama, Bullpen Shines

NYY-Logo(Bronx, NY ) – The Yanks got to end their first homestand in the new park on a positive note and with a winning record, taking 4 of the 6 games and both from Oakland.  Melky Cabrera’s 2 run blast to right field in the bottom of the 14th broke a 7-7 tie and sent 43,000+ fans (not bad for a mid-week game) home happy (some just because it was over!).

The Yanks had some great news in the game.  They banged out 17 hits, 4 more homers, and the bullpen combined for 7.1 innings of scoreless ball, a major improvement from Saturday.  The bad news is they left 13 men on base and their ace, C.C. Sabathia, got tagged for 7 runs (6 earned) in 6.2 innings of work.   But all in all the first walk-off homer in the new stadium’s brief history came at the right time.

On the day Melky had 2 hits (both homers) for 3 RBI’s and raised his average to .304.   Jeter hit his 4th of the year (way ahead of last year’s 4th which came in June) and Matsui got his 2nd of the season and has been hitting better of late.  Damon was 3-5 and Tex, Posada and Cano all had multi-hit games.

But the pen was strong, with some getting just the one out needed while others going deep in innings.  It was a big comeback for winner Jose Veras (1-1) who walked his first batter and then retired 10 in a row.  Coke, Albaladejo, Marte, Ramirez and Rivera all got the job done.

After a day off the Yanks make their first trip to Boston for a big early match with the Red Sox on Friday
