May 7 – Treading Water: Yanks Lose Again, Tampa Prevails 4-3 in 10 Innings

Some Positive Signs, but Team Drops 4th in a Row

ball-glove-png(Bronx, NY) – The week of soggy rain has made the losses even tougher to take.  Sitting at 6-6 in their new park the Bronx Bombers have fallen to a 13-14 record and seem to be unable to make any real forward progress (thus treading water figuratively and literally).    Last night’s extra inning loss did have some positive signs.

First, AJ Burnett pitched well enough, keeping them in the game.  Ramirez and Albaladejo pitched well in relief and Mariano ended his 6-days of inaction with a 3-strikeout inning.  But Phil Coke got nailed by Carlos Pena in the top of the 10th for the

game-winning homer and the Yanks spirited comeback was dashed.

On the offense side they had trouble against a much-improved Andy Sonnanstine from Tampa until the 8th when they broke through.  With heavy rain falling Mark Teixeira, finally had his first big Yankee moment, and banged a bases clearing double to tie the game and the Yanks looked alive.  A rally in the bottom of the 9th looked promising but a bad call on a slow roller by Ramiro Pena (TV replay confirmed) hurt the Yanks as Molina’s fly ball would have been a sac fly instead of the inning-ending out.  But that’s baseball and the Yanks left 11 on base and had their chances.  They try once more against the Rays before heading on the road.

Notes:  A-Rod continues to make progress and could join the team on Friday.  Brian Bruney had a setback and will not come off the DL, another tough blow for the Yanks.

  1. Hey Tom! Did you heard that Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers got suspended 50-games by MLB for using performance enhancing drugs. I am not surprised no more. The former Red Sox star got busted. The Yankees had their chances to win but couldn’t get the clutch hit or the fundamentals again.
