Jul 26 – Home Sweet Home: Yanks Win 9 of 10, Take A’s in Finale 7-5

Back on The Road In First by 2 1/2 Games

nyy-26-logo(Bronx, NY) – The Yanks entered this home stand having lost all 3 in Anaheim and in search of consistency.  10 games later they lead the AL East, won 9 of the home games and got a lot of consistency on both sides of the ball.

Sunday’s match-up versus Oakland started rocky for Sergio Mitre

who yielded 2 in the first.  But a bases clearing double by Robby Cano in the bottom of the first got the Yanks right back and a 4-1 lead.  But Oakland stayed with it and got a 2 run homer off of Phil Coke in the 6th to take the lead again.  It was the 4th blown save for Coke but he would end up with the win and is at 2-3 on the season now.

The relief corps, other than Coke’s mistake, continues to shine.  Phil Hughes went 1.1 innings but his consecutive scoreless streak (24 innings) was in jeopardy in the 8th until Bruney came in and made a big strikeout and Mariano easily picked up the final out in the 8th and breezed through the 9th for his 29th save.

Jeter was 2-4 with two big RBI’s in the 6th , while Tex (1 RBI) and Cody Ransom also had 2 hits.  Matsui had an early RBI.  All told the Yanks and A’s each got 12 hits on the day with every Bomber getting at least one hit.

Notes: Mitre was once again solid enough to keep the team in the game and the Yanks have won both his starts.  On the medical front the Yanks received bad news when they learned that OF Brett Gardner broke his thumb in the Saturday game and is likely out for 4 weeks.   RP Jonathan Albaladejo joined the team from Scranton.  The Yanks won 5 of the 6 games vs. Oakland so far this year all at Yankee Stadium.
