Jul 29 – Joba-rific! Yanks Take Series with 6-2 Drubbing of Rays

Chamberlain is Masterful Through 8 Innings

ny-jersey-logo(Tampa, FL) – The Rays wanted to take the series but the Yanks had other ideas.  Following up their lackluster performance the night before in a 6-2 loss to Scott Kazmir, Joba (7-2) responded with his best starting performance of the year (and perhaps ever).  Scattering 3 meaningless hits over 8 strong innings, Joba kept Tampa off guard all night and the Yanks cruised to a 6-2 win.  He also had 5 K’s on the evening and was in control the whole time for another quality start since the All-Star Break at that Oklahoma respite.

Cano (2 RBI’s) and Melky and Tex (2 RBI’s) all nailed solo homers to seal it late.

Posada chipped in with a RBI and Jeter, Melky and Tex had 2 hits apiece out of the Yanks total of 12.  The only offensive down spot was the 16 men left on base!

Brian Bruney continues to struggle and gave up 2 runs in the 9th trying to finish up the game, the damage off another Evan Longoria homer.  Mariano had to come on to get the final 2 outs and did with 2 K’s sandwiched around a walk.

Notes:   With Boston’s loss the Yanks moved to 3 1/2 games up and sit at 62-39 on the year, winning their 11th of the last 13. They also lead Tampa by 7 1/2 games.  The Yanks move on to Chicago for a 4-game set with the White Sox.  The Boss visited the team in the clubhouse before the game for about 45 minutes.

  1. That was by far Joba’s best start. There have been other times when he had more strikeouts, but last night he was in complete control. I am really curious to see what the Yankees plan on doing when he reaches his presumed innings limit of 150. It would really stink to have to put him back in the bullpen, but it might happen.

  2. Joba Chamberlain spent the All-Star break in Nebraska not Oklahoma with his dad Harlan and his son Karter!! Joba Chamberlain best start ever!! But the Yankees need a better fourth or fifth starter such as Jarrod Washburn but it will take too long for Phil Hughes to get stretched out as a starter after being in the setup guy to Mariano Rivera or the bullpen!!
