Jul 31 – Wise Guy: Yanks Fall to Chicago 3-2 on Walk-off Single

Dramatic Swisher Homer Wasted, 14 Team Strikeouts Hurt

baseball-png-png(Chicago, IL) – The Yanks were poised for a dramatic comeback, with Nick Swisher hitting a 2-out 9th inning dinger to tie the score 2-2.  But Phil Hughes (4-3) tired in the bottom of the inning and gave up 2 singles.  Phil Coke got one out but a single up the middle by DeWayne Wise gave the White Sox their own drama again and a 3-2 victory.    Wise made a tremendous catch at the last home game for Chicago to preserve Mark Buerhle’s perfect game.

The Yanks had their chances but Gavin Floyd and the Sox bullpen mowed down 14 Yankees on K’s, although the strike zone from the home plate umpire seemed incredibly large on the night.  Two errors (with a third listed as single) in the 7th hurt as well.  Pettitte fell fielding a ball, A-Rod missed one (but was listed as a single) and then Cano threw wide on a double play to give the Sox a 2-1 lead setting up the 9th inning heroics on both sides.
