earned runs and picked up 8 K’s.  Phil Hughes and Mariano  finished it off.

Jeter led off the game with a homer on the first pitch in the process notching his 2,700 career hit.  On the night Matsui would add 2 solos shots, Cano would also go deep and A-Rod provided a big insurance blow with a 2-run shot in the fifth.

The Yanks chipped away and scored off of Josh Beckett in each of the first 5 innings, a first in his his career.  It was also the first time Beckett ever gave up 5 home runs in a came.  With the win the Yanks took the series, moved to 78-46 and have a 7 1/2 game lead over Boston in the AL East as they head home for a few series against Texas and Chicago.

Notes: Sabathia remains undefeated for his career in the month of August.

  1. The A.L. East race is over!!!! But the Yankees still must win games because the Yankees haven’t officially clinched yet!!!

  2. That was a fast post, the game ended 2 minutes ago!

    Anyway, with the Yankees winning 2 out of 3 in this series, it really looks like the AL East is over. Even if the Yankees won 1 out of 3, that probably would have been good enough.
