Sep 7 – Take Two! Yanks Double Up Rays, 4-1 and then 11-1

First Labor Day Double Header in 31 Years is a Success, Figurine Night is Fun

NYY 2009 Stadium Logo(Bronx, NY) – It was a beautiful day for a ballgame followed by a nice later summer night for one.  And in the end the Yanks were all smiles as they won the opener 4-1 behind excellent pitching by Sabathia and timely hitting again.  The first game was a pitchers’ duel for most of the game with the game knotted at 1-1.  The Yanks scored early on an RBI double by A-Rod while the Rays countered with a solo shot from Evan Longoria.  CC and Matt Garza both pitched very well.  In the end the Yanks rallied for 3 in the bottom of the 8th off of the Rays bullpen.  Phil Hughes got the win with a scoreless 8th inning while Mariano picked up his 39th save in the 9th.

The night cap was highlighted by Yankee Stadium Figurine night and the FNY team saw 3 make it (John, Brendan and Tom along with guests Jim, David and Garrett).  They sat in Sec 237 in the bleachers for a change and watched AJ Burnett get it together for the first time since July while Mark Teixiera went deep two times and go 3-4 with 4 RBI’s on the night.  The Yanks cruised to a 11-1 thumping of the Rays and improved to 89-50 with a 9 game lead over Boston.
