Sep 11 – Rain Men: Yanks Fall to Orioles 10-4

Loss and Rain Don’t Damper Spirits on Jeter’s Night

baseball3(Bronx, NY) – Obviously Damaso Marte, Edwar Ramirez and Joe Girardi did not read the script stating the Yanks were suppose to win the game on the night Jeter set the record for all-time Yankee hits.  After Pettitte went 5 innings allowing 3 runs in a soggy match, Marte promptly gave up 4 hits, a walk and 4 runs in just 1/3 of an inning to blow the 4-3 lead Andy left him.  And Girardi incredulous watched from the dugout before replacing him with Albaladejo who was able to get out of the inning only to have Ramirez get banged for 3 more hits in the top of the 7th.

The game started well enough as the Yanks got 3 in the first off a long and high homer from A-Rod.  With the wind blowing in it took awhile for the ball to reach the left field 2nd deck but it finally did (one wonders where it would have landed on a clear night).  Baltimore would get 1 back but Jeter picked up his 2nd hit in the 4th for an RBI before the Orioles chipped back to within 1.

A second rain delay in the 7th sent most of the fans home as they saw what they came to see:  History and Jeter.  The game ended at 1:30 AM in the morning and was quite a drawn out affair with the first delay pushing the start some 90 minutes.  But all in all it was a great night as the stadium continued its magical opening act as a 70-year-old record fell and joined the memories of the 13th walk-offs so far this year.  The Friday Night Team had a good time and the package record sits at 11-3 with one to play.

  2. That must have been a great game to witness, despite the final outcome!

  3. It was a beautiful scene to see Jeter passing Gehrig on the all-time Yankees hits list!!! But the Yankees must get down to business and win some games because the Yankees lost today to the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on a Saturday matinee!!! Now the Yankees are 91-52 this season!!!!
