May 12 – Splitsville: Yanks Lose First Game 2-0 but Take Night Cap 8-0 vs Tigers

Hughes Moves to 5-0 and Ends 3-game Losing Streak

(Detroit MI) – Phil Hughes continues to be a monster.  He patrols the mound with a look of invincibility and then throws the stuff to back it up. His strong 7-inning, 8 K performance lowered his ERA for the season to 1.38 and a WHIP under 1.00.  In a tight 2-0 contest the Yanks exploded for 6 runs in the top of the 9th and Mariano made his first appearance in almost 2 weeks to wrap it up.

In the afternoon game Javy Vazquez gave a pretty decent performance but lost 2-0 as the Yanks just could not get the big hit against the Tiger’s Rick Porcello.  At 22-11 now the Yanks hope to get the final game of the series in with CC Sabathia vs. Justin Verlander if the rain holds up.

Notes: Greg Golson picked up his first major league hit with a bloop to center.
