Jul 16 – Friday Night Pie: Swish Leads Yanks Over Tampa 5-4

Nick Delivers 9th inning Walkoff RBI, Goes 3-5 with 1 Homer and 3 RBI’s

(Bronx, NY) – It was exactly what The Boss would have expected.  The Yanks pulled off a gutty win over the Rays with a 2-out walk-off RBI single by Nick Swisher to end the game that honored Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard with a victory in from or 47,000+ cheering fans.  The Yanks would come back twice to tie it with the long ball and eventually set it up for a Mariano (3-1) win using the bottom of the 9th dramatics.

For Swisher it was a memorable night.  He drove in the Yanks first run to cut Tampa’s lead to 3-1.  Back-to-back homers by Cano and Posada to tie it in the 6th got the Yanks even but in the top of the 7th Sabathia got in trouble and a poor decision by A-Rod to throw a slow chopper to first instead of home gave the Rays a 4-3.   But Swish tied it up in the bottom of the 8th with a long blast down the right field line.  Swish was also robbed of an extra-base hit or homer by Gape Kapler who made an excellent catch at the top of the wall earlier.

Dave Robertson pitched well in relief in the 8th striking out the side on 11 pitches.

Notes: Of the Yanks 7 hits on the night, 5 of them drove in runs.  There was a pre-game video honoring George and Bob Sheppard followed by a two -minute moment of silence.  Mariano placed two roses on home plate to remember the men while Jeter gave a short speech.  The game also saw a first:  the batters were not introduced by a public address announcer to honor Sheppard.  The Yanks improved to 6-2 on Friday nights for the season.

  1. great night at the stadium…it was really weird to not have a PA announcer, but it was also a very touching tribute to bob sheppard…there was also a really nice video montage of the boss on the big screen and a touching speech by the captain before the game…also a nice touch having mo walk flowers out to homeplate…most importantly, the yanks won the game in walkoff fashion with the customary victory pie!!! all in all, a perfect night
