Jul 30 – One Bad Pitch: Tampa Takes Yanks 3-2

Tight Pitching Duel Between Hughes and Davis

(Tampa, FL) – Both teams had 4 hits and 1 homer each.  Both pitchers did well and in the end the one bad pitch by Phil Hughes to Matt Joyce ended up a 3-run homer and nipped ahead of the Yanks first inning 2-run shot by Nick Swisher.  Hughes (10-4) missed his down and inside spot and that was it.  A tight pitching duel between the top two teams in baseball (via record) and now the Yanks lead by only one game over the streaking (7 in a row) Tampa Rays.  Matt Garza vs. Javy Vazquez in Game 2.

See Yanks-Tampa box score here.

Notes:  Both teams entered the game at 18-6 in July a .750 pace.  Tampa now has a 19-6 edge for the month with 1 game left to play in July.
