Aug 12 – Texas Two-Step: Yanks Gain Split with Rangers, Battle Back for 7-6 Win

Marcus Thames Provides Clutch Hits, Mariano Gets His Revenge

(Arlington, TX) – In the end it was one of the best two-game series in recent years.  Both games were tight, action-packed affairs with big strikeouts and plays on both sides.  After the Yanks lost a tough one 4-3 in 10 Innings on Tuesday, falling behind 6-1 against Cliff Lee looked ominous.  But they stayed with it and whittled back to 6-4 and knocked Lee out in the 7th inning.  Marcus Thames had a huge night going 3-5 with a homer to make it 6-5 and then the go-ahead RBI single in the 9th.  He followed a seeing-eye hit by Jeter (3-5) that scored the tying run.  In the end it was a big team win with contributions all around:  Berkman had a big double, Granderson got to third nicely on a wild pitch, A-Rod and Gardner had timely RBI’s.  And the bullpen was strong with Sergio Mitre and Kerry Wood (1-0) doing the job after Javy Vazquez got tagged for 6 runs.  Mariano go the save although he gave up a lead-off triple to start the bottom of the 9th, then retired the Ranger’s 3 All-Stars in Young, Hamilton and Guerrero to seal the win.

The games had a playoff atmosphere and could well be a preview of the ALDS or ALCS.

Note:  The Yanks are the first team to 70 wins.  Mark Teixeira is to join the team for the 4 game set vs. Kansas City after the birth of his child earlier in the week.
