Breaking Camp: Yanks Finalize Roster, Finish Spring Training

(Tampa, FL) – The Yanks (12-15) play their last spring training game today and then head north for their opener on Thursday March 21 vs. Detroit.  Some final roster decisions were made with both Eric Chavez and Eduardo Nunez making the club.  The bigger surprise is that both Austin Romine and Jesus Montero will return to AA and AAA ball respectively and Gustavo Molina will be the backup to Russel Martin at catcher.  Girardi and company stated that neither had a great spring season and they want them to get more at-bats and experience, which has some merit.  But one of them is likely to see some time this year in the Bronx at some point.

On the pitching front Mitre was traded and Garcia will be in the starting rotation with Colon in the pen.  And Kevin Millwood was signed to a minor league deal and seems to be an insurance policy, while Mark Prior will stay in Tampa for more work as a reliever.

This spring was a decent one in terms of getting ready but there were tons of ink written on the Yankees Rotation, Boston’s chances to win 100 games, Jeter’s batting stride and if he can bounce back and oblique muscle strains (the Yanks had 3 of them).  It will be good to finally PLAY BALL.

Update:  The Yanks defeated Detroit 2-1 with a bases-load walk by A-Rod and a solo blast by Romine to end at 13-15 in the Grapefruit League for 2011.  Freddy Garcia pitched well and is ready for his opening start next week.
