Busy Friday: Yanks Fall to Red Sox 9-6, Manny Retires To Avoid Suspension

Lackey Didn’t Deserve Win, Colon Didn’t Deserve the Loss

(Boston, MA) – The Yanks (4-3) had their first of 18 match-ups with Boston and came away the loser in more ways than one.  For all the focus on AJ Burnett in the off-season, he’s actually started fairly well with 2 wins and decent outings while Phil Hughes looked bad for his second time on the hill.  He lasted only 2 innings, had no velocity and gave up 6 runs.  Just plain awful.  Bartolo Colon (0-1) actually pitched fairly well in relief allowing 2 runs, only 1 earned, while striking out 5.

The offense struck early with Cano getting a 2-run double, Swish then Jeter getting solo RBI’s and A-Rod hitting his 3rd dinger of the year to tie it at 6-6.  Gardner may be finding his groove while Tex is cooling off some.

See Yanks-Boston box score here.

But the bigger news was Manny Ramirez, who opened the season with Tampa and was just 1-17, has retired.   He tested positive for drugs in spring training and was thus looking at a 100-game suspension and so decided to hang up his cleats. Somewhat ironic as the Yanks biggest nemesis all those years sits down as the Bombers are in Boston and before they saw him in an AL match-up with Tampa one last time.  For all his greatness at the plate, his legacy will be a fairly tarnished after this one.

Manny was a tough out in his prime, but what was he thinking ???
