Catching On: Yanks Continue to Gel; Top Brewers Again 5-2

Russell Martin 3-Run Blast is the Big Blow

(New York, NY) – AJ Burnett (8-6) pitched 7 innings again, D-Rob (H, 16) and Mo (S, 21) did their 8th and 9th inning thing again and Russell Martin’s big 3-run homer was the difference as the Yanks (47-31) won another series.  Jorge Posada hit his 3rd homer in 7 games in the 6th inning to pad the lead.  The umpires reviewed the blow but upheld the call.

The Bombers 5-2 win over Milwaukee makes them 10-4 in interleague play on the year.  With Boston and Tampa losing the Yanks put a slight gap in their place on top of the AL East.

Notes:  After the game the Yanks announced they had acquired Sergio Mitre from the Brewers.  He returns to the Bronx again!  Nunez made his 10th error of the season, a trend that needs to stop.

Posada and Martin both went deep to secure the Yanks 47th win of the season

Fog To Forget: Yanks Downed by Rockies 4-2

2011 Friday Curse Continues

(New York, NY) –  The Yanks (43-31) continue to struggle on Friday nights at home, this time falling to the visiting Rockies 4-2.  They got on the board early with a double down the line by A-Rod to score Granderson but Tex got held at 3rd and then Cano lined into a double-play as A-Rod got picked off of second and killed a promising beginning.  Jason Giambi led off the 2nd inning with a long blast for his 8th homer of the year and on the night went 3-4.  Not bad for a part-time player who loved returning to a DH role in an AL park.  A-J Burnett (7-6) took the loss and while not horrible he was not great and gave up solo runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to put the Yanks behind.  Meanwhile Ubaldo Jimenez, who has been struggling so far this year, put together a strong effort for Colorado (38-37).

It seems Fridays are not their day (or rather night) this season.  The game was played under a threat of rain all night and fog filled the upper deck of the stadium from the 4th inning on.

Notes:  For the FNY team, John, Brendan, Tom and Emmett (and Michelle) were present with Brendan’s guest Mike.

Super Nova: Ivan Cruises for 8 Innings, Yanks Beat Cincy 5-3

Bombers take 3rd Straight on the Road, 6 of Last 7

(Cincinnati, OH) – Ivan Nova (7-4) won his 3rd straight as well as the Yanks (42-29) in a solid 8 inning, 1 run performance over the host Reds.  Mariano (S,18) would close it out after Ayala and Logan got in trouble.  The Yanks scored 4 runs in the first to stake Nova with various singles and double from Cano to pace the effort.  After taking 2 of 3 in Wrigley versus the Cubs, this opener with the Reds keeps them on pace with the Red Sox.

Notes:  The recent offensive surge now has Cano, A-Rod and Gardner all batting over .290.

It was all Ivan over 8 innings in Ohio allowing just 4 hits.

Hit Parade: What Type Will Jeter Hit for the Milestone?

(New York, NY) – While the big question on everyone’s mind is when will the Captain hit the famous 3,000 hit (and can he do it at home) FNY will ask a different question:  What type of hit will it be?  Why?  Why not.

Historic Walls: Yankee Museum at the Stadium

A Must See for All Fans

(New York, NY) – So some of the FNY Sec 430 team got to swing through the museum.  Given that we’ve been going to the new stadium since the opening in 2009 it was high time to actually see all the history grouped nicely in a small space.  See pictures below.  It is highly recommended for all fans to see.

Fun Friday (Finally) – Yanks Clip Cleveland 11-7

Win First Friday Home Game of the Season

(Bronx, NY) – Well the FNY team finally had something to cheer about as the Bombers (34-27) scored early and often enroute to a 11-7 victory over the Indians to open up a 4-game series.  it stopped the 3-game losing streak to the Red Sox as well and the team needed that.  With 15 hits and 11 runs there were plenty of offense and heroes all around but of special note was Ivan Nova’s (5-4) stopper performance of 7 innings, 2 earned runs and only 4 hits while notching 6 k’s.

A-Rod (12) and Granderson (19) dingers were nice to see while Cano and Posada picked up 3 hits apiece to pace the offense.  Unfortunately the depleted bullpen imploded over the last 2 innings as Whelan, Sanit and Pendleton could not finish things and gave up 5 runs to make it a lot closer than it looked.  In the end Mariano had to come in to get the final two outs to register the team win.

It was a fun night for the FNY team although Emmett and James could not make it so Paul and Jamie brought dates.  Tom, John and Brendan had a great time visiting Hard Rock and then the Yankee Museum with pictures to follow soon.

Notes:  Jeter picked up one hit to move to 2,991 in his career.  It was Jorge Posada figurine night and a festive time.  Tom, John and Brendan ran into the Marlboro Man and reminisced his famous fall down the stairs in the upper deck vs. Boston in 2008.

Body Blows: Yanks Getting Hit Left and Right

Lose First 2 to Boston, Then Joba for the Season

(New York, NY) – On Monday the Yanks (33-26) were coming off a successful road trip, sitting in first place and feeling pretty good going into the Red Sox series.  3 Days later, they are hoping to salvage one game to get back into first place, (pending a rain delay), having lost the first two and looking badly in the process.  They seemed to have dodged an injury bullet with Tex getting hit on the knee but today got the devastating news today that Joba’s stint on the DL is much worse:  Tommy John surgery is needed and he may not pitch until next summer.  This is really bad as they have already lost Soriano for some time (and he was ineffective anyhow), still no real clue on when Phil Hughes will come back, Garcia is starting to look vulnerable and it remains to be seen if A.J. is regressing to 2010 form.  Russell Martin had some back problems and Chavez is still out.

The season is a long one and, as usual, will have its ups and downs but feel free to comment on the latest news and state of the union.

Road Warriors: Yanks Take Series from Angels, End Road Trip 6-3

Big Series vs. Red Sox Begins Tuesday

(New York, NY) – The Yanks (33-24)  used the long ball, with 2 shots from Tex and one from Swish, along with enough pitching from Colon (4-3) and great relief from Robertson, Joba and Mariano (S 16) to take the final game from the Angels 5-3 and end a successful West coast swing.  Now the Bombers play the Red Sox at the Stadium for a 3 game set.  The Yanks lead the AL East over Boston by 1 game and are 1-5 this season so far vs. the Red Sox so a good series is needed.

Bay Area Broom: Yanks Sweep Oakland, Take Finale 4-2

4-Game Winning Streak, 6 of Last 8

(Oakland CA) – The Yanks (31-23) have bounced back nicely from their opening two losses on the road trip with a sweep of the A’s and a 4-game streak heading into a weekend match with the Angels.  AJ Burnett (6-3) gave up an early 2-run homer than settled down and pitched 7 solid innings of 3-hit ball before turning over to Joba and then Mo for his 14th save of the season.  The big blow of the game came from Nick Swisher who bluffed a bunt with 2 on before swinging away and deposited his 4th homer of the season and 3 RBI’s to take a 4-2 lead in the 4th inning.

The Yanks took all 3 games in Oakland against pitchers with a low ERA but seem to have found some hitting of late.

Notes:  Jeter remains hot in the first inning, has a 7-game hitting streak and now needs 16 hits for the milestone.   A-Rod moved his average to .292 and now leads the starters in that category.  Joba made a nice double play on a line-drive comebacker after allowing 2 on with 1 out in the 8th.
